Incarcerated dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel is set to sponsor a robotics camp for students from every high school in his hometown of Portmore, St Catherine.
The deejay, who recently announced that he would be donating computers to every high school in Portmore under his VK clothing line brand, is making another step to immerse his young fans into technology.
Robotics involves using computer science and engineering to create robots and/or devices that move and react to a sensor. During the camp, students should become familiar with basic robot design, construction and programming.
“We have engaged Marvin Hall, who represents Halls of Learning, to host a one-day robotics class to be held in Portmore. We will be approaching all the high schools in Portmore to have their students attend,” said Shona-Lee S. Thompson, brand manager of Official VK Line.
Thompson, who recently handed over a computer to the principal and students of Greater Portmore High School, said the Gaza Literacy Programme is now in full effect.
“We have received acceptance from another school and expect to do another handover very soon. We wanted to bring something new and exciting to the children of Portmore, while educating them at the same time,” she said.
Halls of Learning is a Jamaica-based organisation that hosts after-school robotics clubs and annual robotics summer camps. They are also involved in outreach programmes.
Since 2014, through a partnership with the Musson Foundation, Halls of Learning started the ‘Lego Yuh Mind Outreach Day’ and, through that effort, has awarded more than 600 scholarships via their one-day event.
The United Nation International Children Educational Fund featured their work in the Kingston community of Mountain View as a part of their 2015 State Of The Worlds’ Children report.
The Official VK Line, authorised and endorsed by Vybz Kartel, was recently launched at House of Dancehall in Kingston. The clothing line is available for shipping worldwide from www.officialvkline.com. The brand currently features male and female tops, shorts and intimate wear.
The clothing line can be viewed on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @officialvkline.
