Fast rising social network Snapchat in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, released a Bob Marley lens filter today. The lens filter gives you dreadlocks in a Rasta tam, and a digital Bob Marley face, with Marley’s One Love, Could You Be Loved, and No Woman No Cry background music interchangeable with the raise of an eyebrow.

While some users are excited, Snapchat has come under harsh criticism for the introduction of the filter. Bad timing, with today being recognized worldwide as 4/20 Weed Day, critics are outraged at the timing of the release of the lens filter. A number of persons have shared their disgust on social networking site Twitter where the words ‘Bob Marley’ have trended worldwide, as users express outrage that Snapchat thought it cool to reduce Bob Marley’s legacy to weed day. Many users are questioning why wasn’t the filter released on his birthday?

Snapchat has since responded to the backlash, stating that the filter was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and the aim was to give users a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music.

Earlier this year just in time for the celebration of what would be Marley’s 71st Birthday, the Bob Marley Estate launched an official line of Marley Natural products which included Marley branded marijuana.

In recognition of 4/20 day, music streaming site Spotify also has Bob Marley in their 4/20 celebrations with an official 4/20 ‘This is Bob Marley’ music mix.

Since the 1970s, April 20 has been recognized and celebrated as a day for cannabis lovers. Smokers and non-smokers alike in North America and Europe, continue to celebrate cannabis culture on this day.
